A good period over the Festive Season saw Phoenix riders, Jake Dobson almost complete a hat-rick of victories in the U14′s races, and Thomas Hordon with consistent performances but unfortunately no podium places, competing in the U16′s, both against strong competition.
Wins at Carlisle, South Shields and just missing out at Gateshead this weekend with an untimely fall/slip near the end of his race, it still proved a successful couple of weeks for Jake.
Overall in their respective categories for the Season Jake is sitting in 2nd place, Thomas 4th, and Louis 11th with just 3 races to go. Well done to them all, and keep going.Lets hope this may give a few more Phoenix riders the taste to have a go next season!!
More detailed results can be found on the CXNE website plus more info on what its all about and how to get involved if your interested. Apologies to Louis for not including any photos of him as I haven’t got any of you yet, that’s why.
There was an excellent turn-out for the 3rd Annual Santa Run, held for the 1st time this year along the coast from Tynemouth Priory to Blyth South Beach. We all managed to return in one piece despite a few slippy patches and a couple of offs, but if you will jump off the prom onto the beach then what do you expect? This maybe?or this? The South Beach Cafe had their numbers swelled and their cakes depleated by our hungry peleton and we left refreshed and a good deal warmer for the ride back. Richie was the winner in the Youth Category of the best Santa Look-a-like competition with Deanna completing a clean sweep for the Allen family by winning the adult category. Prizes will be presented at coaching on 7th January
Well done to Jake Dobson in this weekends National Cyclocross at Peel Park Bradford. Racing in appalling and testing conditions not unlike the Somme by all accounts, with a rear mech problem and a bit of carrying and a change of bike required to complete the race.
On Saturday 17th December there will be no training as we are going on our annual Santa Run. This year we will be heading off to the coast. The route is from Tynemouth Battery Car Park, or St.Mary’s Lighthouse Car Park (the 1st one not the larger main one) along the coast to Blyth South Beach and back, with a tea stop at South Beach.
Everyone is welcome, including Mum’s & Dad’s, family & friends.
For those wishing to do the longer ride (16 miles) please meet at Tynemouth Battery Car Park at 09:00 hrs for off at 09:30 hrs sharp.
For those wishing to do the shorter ride (8 miles) please meet at the 1st St.Mary’s Lighthouse Car Park at 09:45 hrs for off at 10:15 hrs.
The route is on non-traffic paths with the exception of the first and last 1/2 mile out of Tynemouth which is on footpath or quiet roads. It is a flat route throughout.
Estimated distance is 16 miles so should be back by 13:30 hrs. (12:30 hrs for the shorter route)
There will be a prize for the best santa look-a-like!
Well done to Jake Dobson who was chosen to ride in the North East B Team in the Inter-Regional Cyclocross Championships in Milton Keynes last weekend. The North East A team came 7th out of 26 teams (all Youth A, U16 riders), and the North East B Team came 14th (Jake and Thomas Mein (Hetton Hawks) both Youth B U14 riders and Elliot Davidson (Hetton Hawks) Youth A U16). It was a hard course in the Milton Keynes Bowl, with 100m of climbing on every lap, so not a bad effort! The A team improved from 9th and B team improved their position from 21st last year.

See if you can all make it and I’ll guarantee it’ll be a great day – even if it rains!
Just to get you motivated here’s a Danny Macaskill video to keep you entertained. You never know Ian might incorporate some of these moves in to his coaching session!
If anyone is interested in meeeting up and joining other members of the club for a Sunday club run then meet up every Sunday at the Ponteland Sports Centre at 09:30 prompt.
Club runs are for members of Newcastle Phoenix Cycling Club
Due to cycling on open roads and for obvious safety reasons; All youth members must be accompanied by an adult
Make sure you bring something to eat and drink with you
Bring some money as more often than not we’ll be stopping off at a tea room
Always bring a spare inner tube, tyre levers and a pump
Also bring a puncture repair kit
A small multi tool is useful in case of any mechanicals
The club rides will vary in distance (currently 30 ~ 40 miles)
What a great day had by all at the Hamsterley Forest coaching and family ride. Fantastic trails and sunshine.
Thanks to Alex for the coaching on the different obstacles in the skills area and well done to all the kids (and adults) who had a go.
Louis gave a lesson on the do and don’ts of braking or rather the don’ts of front wheel braking across slippery wooden bridges – a few bumps and scrapes and he was back on his feet (pity about the bike though).
Jake won the mars bar for completing one of the technical sections, young Charles just kept going and going and going…..and gave a superb demonstration of a roll off – well done Charles. Even Terry, Charles’ dad, had a go at a drop off – not sure if he’ll be trying it again any time soon though!
The youngest member of the group, Daniel, had a great ride leading the group at one stage through the trails.
Well done to all of the lads who came along, Elliot, Nathan, Jake, Charles, Daniel, Louis and also thanks to the parents who joined in.
You can check out the video footage below – thanks to Adrian for bringing his camera along to capture the event.
We’ve got the Chopwell woods Family ride coming up soon (date to be confirmed) and it’d be great to see more of you come a long.
Check out this amazing downhill run by British Cycling’s Danny Hart winning at the Downhill World Championship 2011.
Wonder if we’ll see any thing like it at Hamsterly?!!

Please contact Steve Bullivant via email so he can arrange for bikes to be picked up. Please note that you will need to pick up any hire bikes from North Shields yourself.
